Neighborhood (good) news: CWE father and daughter praised by city:
I wanted to share a heart-warming scene I witnessed tonight.
As I was driving on Boyle around 6:15pm (Sunday, 3/26), I saw a father, Jake Rosenfeld, with his 7 year old daughter, Ida May McGaughey, picking up trash in the neighborhood. I had to pull over and tell them thank you for caring about their neighborhood and for taking time on a beautiful evening to do something good for everyone. Ida was so busy using her small hands to pick up some trash wedged in a small crack in the sidewalk that at first she did not notice me.
I cannot begin to tell you how touched I am to see parents showing their children it is never too early to start caring about their neighborhood.
I am including a photo of Jake and Ida May. I am going to give them City of St. Louis lapel pins as a small token of appreciation (or something similar) for their Civic Pride. Maybe we could make Ida Mae an Honorary or Junior NIS with a certificate to present to her? Wouldn’t it be cool if we could inspire others to do this as well in their neighborhoods? I know it is being done but it would be nice to let others see how residents (especially families) are taking steps to care for their neighborhoods in which they live.
I hope this story touches your heart as it has mine and it carries you through the week that we are not alone in picking up trash/litter in the neighborhood and it does not go unnoticed.
Sincerely,
Karen Clifford, St. Louis City Neighborhood Improvement Specialist
