WPLNA meeting Tues., May 9 at 7 pm

The West Pine Laclede Neighborhood Association will meet on Tuesday, May 9 at 7:00 pm at Northwest Coffee, 4251 Laclede (at Boyle).  All are welcome

We will have a full and interesting agenda:

  • Representatives from the Independence Center will give a presentation on their proposal to build a four-story apartment building for their senior clients at 4221 Forest Park Boulevard (just east of Boyle and adjacent to the Center’s main building and parking lot).
  • The site currently is occupied by an historic commercial building that’s been vacant for several years.  The structure last was occupied by Allied Photocolor.
  • The project is asking for tax abatement, which means that our Association’s support is critical to the success of the proposal.

  • Our May meeting will provide an opportunity to welcome to the neighborhood Alderman Michael Browning of the newly-created 9th Ward.
  • Although Alderman Browning has attended a number of our meetings in the past year, his presence on Tuesday will be the first in his newly elected position. (As most of us are aware, the Alderman defeated our former Alderwoman Tina “Sweet-T” Pihl of the now-defunct 17th Ward in April’s general election.)

  • The “41 Lindell” multi-family apartment building proposed for the sites currently occupied by both the Lindell Professional Building and the former Places For People building, has come back from the dead!
  • Dan Helmuth, the chairman of our Development Committee, and Harold Karabell met with developer Gary Hassenflu, his St. Louis attorney Jim Fredericks, and Alderman Browning earlier this week to discuss the recently-revived project.
  • Dan and Harold plan to give a report on the outcome of that meeting.
  • As most members will recall, the Association has had a number of meetings over the past several years with both the developer and his attorney, the most recent being in June of last year. That meeting produced an absolute deadlock on the merits of the “new and improved” design for the apartment building but an overwhelming opposition to the developer’s request for an alley setback variance.

  • Election of officers
  • We have a full agenda but, time permitting, we hope t o hold election of officers.  Nominations will be accepted from the floor only.
  • If time does not permit elections at this meeting they will be deferred until the June meeting.

We hope to see you next Tuesday.
