WPLNA Meeting – Tues, May 14 at 7 pm

The West Pine Laclede Neighborhood Association will meet on Tuesday, May 14  at 7 pm at Northwest Coffee, 4251 Laclede (at Boyle).  All are welcome!

Our guest speaker will be Marschnee Strong, the Development and Communications Director for Craft Alliance.  Craft Alliance, formerly in the Delmar Loop in University City, moved only three years ago to its current location art 5080 Delmar in the ‘Maker District’.

Neighborhood Improvement Specialist Ron Coleman and Alderman Michael Browning will discuss the recent request from several neighbors for the installation of speed humps in the 4100 / 4200 block of Laclede.

Attached are the minutes from April’s meeting.  Please take a minute to review before the meeting as they will be presented for approval.  Also please note that membership dues are due if you haven’t already paid them.

Review and approve March 2024 Minutes- The March minutes were passed out and there was a unanimous decision to postpone approval of minutes until the beginning of the May meeting.

GUEST SPEAKERS:

Committeewoman candidate  Deborah Loveless

• Former committee woman from the old 28th ward and has been working on a 9th ward Democratic Club, which meets on the third Thurs of each month. Next meeting is on April 18th at 7:30 at Urban Chestnut on Manchester. They will be hosting delegates and candidates for state and local offices. She and her husband Parker Loveless are working to inform voters on this year’s candidates, encourage voter turnout, and supporting voter registration in our area. Deborah and her husband Parker are running for 9th ward committee woman and committee man.

• There will be a 9th ward townhall meeting on May 2nd at 4234 Washington from 7-8:30.

Lorraine was not in attendance, but Sharon Olwig reported that some plants and flowers are starting to bloom in the cul-de -ac at the end of West Pine. There are trash grabbers available to help with trash and litter pick up in the neighborhood.

Security Liaison Open position

  • Catherine Swanstrom reported a concern with unhoused individuals in our area. She is concerned about a local man who is creating some makeshift housing space inside one of the local bus stops. She is also concerned with the closing of Sunday Best and keeping that area well-lit and occupied, but emphasized the need to always keep an eye on that area.
  • Harold reported that he’s spoken with Calvin, our homeless neighbor living in the bus shelter on Lindell. Calvin has refused all offers of assistance from various social workers, including Alvin Ferguson, outreach worker for the Central West End Neighborhood Security Initiative. (Update: As of 4/22/2024, Calvin has relocated to the front yard of the former Places For People building on Lindell.)
  • Catherine reports that the Cathedral has resources available for those who are unhoused or in need of support. If you or anyone you know needs support to call the Cathedral hotline which is regularly checked.
  • Alvin Ferguson 314-904-6979 can be reached for concerns with unhoused or other local disturbances and concerns.

  • Neighbor asked about how to contact the city to inquire/protest about trees marked for cut down.
  • 4300 Laclede is handing out information to request for parking permits. Hang tags no longer required for parking.
  • Passed out information about mitigating mold and recycling information.
  • Concerned neighbor asking about speed bumps or other traffic calming devices on Laclede.
